Hello! My name is Bryon Howard with RE / Max House of Real Estate. I would like to talk to you today about home safety.

When my buyers buy a property, I want to make sure they’re safe and that they buy a home that is in good condition. One of the very first things we do before buying a home is perform a home inspection. During a home inspection, the inspector will make sure that the home is structurally sound and will identify any issues that you will need to address in the future.

Day one of moving into your new home you will want to change the locks. Because there may be some other keys in the past tenants family and friend’s hands, you want to be sure that your doors have fresh locks, as well as your gates and windows. Don’t forget to change the codes for any electronic keypads – and consistent in changing that code every six months.

After you get settled in, it may be a good idea to install some perimeter lighting around your home and leave them on throughout the night. If your front door doesn’t have a chain or peephole, get one.

The last thing you need to do to stay safe in your home is to make sure that your home is insured against floods, fires and any other natural disaster.
